A gang is a group of people, through the organisation, formation, and establishment of an assemblage, share a common identity. In current usage it typically denotes a criminal organisation or else a criminal affiliation. The word gang often carries a negative connotation; however, within a gang which defines itself in opposition to mainstream norms, members may adopt the phrase as a statement of identity or defiance.
Gangs play a key part in the Grand Theft Auto series, with gangs usually providing continued employment for the protagonist in commiting crimes against individuals and other gangs whose activities are to weaken them. They are often aggressive and many attack the protagonist, with some becoming aggressive as the player progresses through the game. Gangs can also offer assistance to the player, in particular in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Lost and Damned where gang members can be recruited.
