Gameids Template

Hi Gerard, just pointing out that your recent edits to Template:Gameids (which you actually moved to Template:id), have actually broken a number of templates. The purpose of that template used to be to convert the Game ID (such as IV) to the full game name with a link (such as Grand Theft Auto IV). After the recent edits, the functionality has now been reversed to convert any input to the game ID, and a lot of templates, such as infoboxes, relied on the old functionality. For example, see the Yakuza article - {{infobox gang}} used to convert game IDs to game names, but now it's the actual IDs that are listed on the page. Seeing as the template being utilised by these infoboxes is actually now just a redirect to the new template, should we simply recreate the old template at the old title? Or is the plan to update all of the infoboxes to stop using it and use something else instead (such as {{long}}, and the infobox itself would have to produce the link)? JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 04:30, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Yep, that's all clear - The semantic stuff is really starting to shape together! I'll start to help out with updating all of the pages in the near future. JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 11:30, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Common typo

Hey Gboyers, I've seen many errors in the use of the word "it's".

This site shows the way it should be used: http://garyes.stormloader.com/its.html

It's is a contraction for it is or it has.

Its is a possessive pronoun meaning, more or less, of it or belonging to it.

I've been correcting pages, but it's very common. Users that may not know the use of it may think I'm vandalising the wiki.

The mistake is so common; do you think it's best to just leave them, or correct it? I don't want to start any trouble, or have others reverting my edits.

Please tell me what you think is best.

Thanks, --Original Light (talk) 18:00, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for clearing that up. Time to go searching! --Original Light (talk) 23:12, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

I just want to mention that not every article uses specific perimeters required for {{gameselect}} in {{Infobox vehicle}}. As a result an unknown number of articles will have the "Appearance(s)" field blanked if exact strings of text are not entered. Could the #ifexist syntax be reinstated or a notification on articles with this error be included? I'm not sure if I can work out the code at this time. - ZS (talk|edits) 19:37, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Re:Activity

Hey, thanks for checking up on me. Yeah, I've been kinda busy lately what with my preparations for university and the fact that I'm currently on vacation out of the country. Since I devote a lot of my free time to my social life, writing, music, and a few other stuff, I guess I haven't been particularly active. Also the fact that I'm an administrator on a fanon wiki means I have to divide my online time well, and it happens that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot I can find to contribute here, whereas I always have something new to write there. Of course, if I'm needed for administrative reasons here at any time, I always check in provided I receive an email notification. Still, I think this wiki has enough admins to deal with any issues that may come up, and even then, the community here is in a lot better condition than the other one I'm administrating (non-canon respecting fanfiction writers with the spelling ability of first graders, ugh), so if you think I'm not needed, you can remove me from the administrators group. I just come over here occasionally when I think of something to add to an article, and that's not very frequent anymore as I don't really play GTA now, and most of my association with it now is ideas for future GTA stories. Anyway, thanks again for checking in and let me know what your decision is. Silver Infernus talk 05:00, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Re: Mandatory image use for {{Infobox vehicle}}

I'm not particularly fond of having this infobox require an image link, as there are special cases where a vehicle article encompass vastly different iterations of vehicles that use the same name; the original infobox code was tailored to make available the option of not having a lead image, leaving galleries and thumbnails outside the infobox to provide illustrations instead.

By making images mandatory in the infobox, people are being forced to choose only one rendition; but it's come to the point when a recurring vehicle may have a relatively rich history in the series that it's not satisfactory enough to sum up its existence in just one image. I'm sure you're heard me mentioned about this before, but bias favoring specific games or generations isn't acceptable. - ZS (talk|edits) 12:43, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

You got me at a gallery template that supports all images in the lead (i.e. in a photo album-like UI). This is the best compromise available. Sure, there are issues with inconsistent image dimensions, but it can work. - ZS (talk|edits) 02:23, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Naming conventions

Hi. I'm a bit confused right now. You have renamed a few images recently, (Example), stating "naming conventions" as the reason. However, our naming convention has, for as long as I've been here, been [subject]-[game]-[additional info] ("Infernus-GTAV-prerelease-front"), the ones you moved were changed to [game]-[subject] ("GTAV-Infernus"). It was a number of images too, so I'm just wondering if this is a change you are planning to make or if it was simply a mistake. :P

Hi

Hi gboyers i am new to this wiki as before i was contributing to the gta.wikia.com i am a PC Gamer and i visit the gtaforums.com daily, i wanted ask if i can upload badges for each Car/Bike (if it contains in the game files)like the one above. im expecting a kind reply Thanks in advance --02:10, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Your reply is very much appreciated and i got the point plus i found another company in GTA V's Trailer but it's a garbage company so i was wondering if i could make a seperate page for this. the official (fan made logo) can be found here. --Faizanali (talk|edits)

RE:

Sorry for continuous reply's but i had to ask : 1. Do you still visit gta.wikia? 2. Are there limitations on this wiki? (Like page limitations) 3. Are you looking forward to GTA V? These were the questions now for requests. Please can you add the "See Also" option at the bottom of the page like every wikia has. Kindly reply to all the statements above Thanks. --Faizanali (talk|edits) 03:17, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

RE:

You sir deserve a medal Thanks it was nice talking to you i always wanted to talk to you since i heard the staff moved to grandtheftwiki one last question when i searched for the AA-12 gun there was no page not even the redirect page to Automatic Shotgun and when i tried to create one i saw that the page was deleted by the User:A-Dust this is why i asked you the question of if there were any limitations and i think you are doing your job well because ive seen unwanted pages all over the gta.wikia Thanks you are amazing. --Faizanali (talk|edits) 03:30, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Mission location

Hello, I have a question What should I put as the location of a mission? Some mission articles have as location the place where you trigger the mission, but other articles have the place where the mission takes place instead, this confused me TheReaperHoldsOurHearts (talk|edits) 22:53, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea. I'm going to replay TLAD and TBOGT soon, so maybe I can help with this. TheReaperHoldsOurHearts (talk|edits) 23:43, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Admin rights

Hello, I just noticed that all of my administrator rights seem to have vanished although the visuals such as the badge remain. I can't tell for how it has been like this but I can only imagine something went wrong when you restored our usergroups?

"Group Change" Email

Hello, Gboyers.

I don't check my mail often, but, as I checked it today, I received this notification Email twelve days ago. It says:

"Hello Originalusername.

This is to inform you that your group memberships on Grand Theft Wiki were changed by Gboyers at 18:20, 8 September 2012.

I checked my groups in the preferences page. Not there. I also checked the group's user list. Not there either. Was a mistake been made, or a glitch in the system, etc.? Originalusername (talk|edits) 20:46, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for clearing that up! Regards. Originalusername (talk|edits) 21:42, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Community Event

Hello Gboyers I know I have not been active lately but I had an idea about GTW hosting some kind of Community Event or in other words just invite the community to multiplayer matches for GTA IV. Let me know what you think.Gtajesus (talk|edits) 18:50, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Community Page has been created. Also what would be the deadlines for signups? Gtajesus (talk|edits) 23:22, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Category bar

What is it with the category bar unnecessarily inflated by "xx > yy > zz" links that occasionally repeat itself? These things occasionally overshadow the articles themselves and have become a bit of a distraction for both the readers and editors. - ZS (talk|edits) 19:12, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Wiki is running slow?

Hi, it's possible that this is a problem on my end as no one else seems to have reacted on it, but for the last week or 10 days, the Wiki has been running extremely slowly for me. Pages will hardly ever finish loading and if they do, the visuals will fail somehow in 90% of the cases, mostly looking like this but a few times it has been a bit worse than that and looked like this. It's been making it almost impossible for me to even look at the list of Recent changes. This evening though it seems to have improved a bit but maybe there is less stress on the server at this time of the week or something? Or do you think it's a problem on my end? Thanks Andreaz1 (talk|edits) 00:10, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Of course, I understand. Thank you for your response. :) Andreaz1 (talk|edits) 20:43, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Heh, no I won't. I tend to doubt myself and think I'm wrong, especially so in this case as no one else seemed to be having any problems. I won't do that from now on. Everything is back to working just as well as it did before. Andreaz1 (talk|edits) 21:08, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

"Junk" user registrations

I've been noticing a instances of user registrations with completely nonsensical usernames occurring every once in a while (i.e. October 29). What do you make of it? - ZS (talk|edits) 15:19, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Good to know that you're keeping a eye on that. Thanks for the response. - ZS (talk|edits) 16:25, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Sunqueen/Sunqueer

I created the page Sunqueen a few days ago. And I saw a similar page named Sunqueer. I watched the Introduction video for GTA SA on Youtube and found out that the correct spelling is Sunqueen. Watch the video and tell me what you think is the correct one. Delete the page with incorrect spelling. Thanks. Angelobrylle24 17:56, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

GI images

I'm not sure if it's a good time to post those picture so soon after the preview's release, especially with those watermarks in view. If GTAForums is so concerned about preventing people from posting any GI material, we may want to do the same for now if we want to stay out of trouble. - ZS (talk|edits) 22:54, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Fine. But if the relevant parties do request to remove them, we'll need to comply. Otherwise, we can assume they either don't mind or didn't notice. - ZS (talk|edits) 23:09, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

2D/3D/HD universes

What do you think about recategorising games into 2D, 3D, and HD universes? Like in Wikipedia, because GTA V is in the same universe as GTA IV. Angelobrylle24 16:16, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Grand Theft Auto (GBA) Release Date

Is Grand Theft Auto Advance released on the same day as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, or is it released one day before the North American PS2 version of San Andreas? :-) Angelobrylle24 (talk|edits) 17:53, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Okay. Another one not about the release date but still related to Advance. I noticed there aren't any pages for cheats in GTA Advance, are there any cheats in that game? Angelobrylle24 (talk|edits) 18:10, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would, it's now on my To-Do List. Angelobrylle24 (talk|edits) 18:19, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to check the contributions numerically?

Is there any way i can get to know my Contributions in Numbers? --Faizanali (talk|edits) 15:51, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

RE:How to check the contributions numerically?

Thanks for the informative post, Naw i was just wondering how much Contributions I've done since my account was created. --Faizanali (talk|edits) 21:09, 17 November 2012 (UTC) One more thing, Am i doing the right thing to post the websites as images? Because at the time when GTA IV was released on Consoles and not on PC BOY i couldn't resist, How much of a clusterf*ck could R* do? I also wanted to see and experience that feel of searching those websites INGAME, But at that time no one had posted images of websites :( To me i think im doing a good thing. --Faizanali (talk|edits) 21:14, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

RE:Websites

Thank You Sir i will surely complete it sooner or later, From what i have known the Internet files aren't actually that kind of spoilers and are completely non-intractable, I show you an example with craplist.net

In-Game: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090131015304/gtawiki/images/d/d2/Craplist1.jpg

From the Game's Internet Files/Textures: http://i.imgur.com/fgNx3.png?1

See what i mean? Every mission/story related website is non accessible through Internet Files, Thats how intelligent R* is. --Faizanali (talk|edits)

Poll

That poll, 'When will GTA V be released?', is kinda redundant now isn't it? Unless we refine it to March, April and May (or behind-schedule). JFletcherTalk (formerly User:Biggest gta fan ever) 23:30, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

It is, I've just been having a little trouble replacing it. Will look into it later this week. gboyers talk 00:47, 19 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Displeasure

You must excuse my sporadic response in talk pages. Expressing my problems with this wiki in words and replying to complicated discussions is not my strong suit; in fact I'm increasingly displeased that my participation in community talk discussions has had little effect in changing things while distracting me from actually improving articles. I have to be blunt; while this wiki is still a great platform with lots of articles in dire need of TLC, the bullshit policy-making here is a waste of manpower when it could be used to promote the wiki for more traffic and new editors, because in case you haven't noticed, the GTA Wikia is still as popular as ever. - ZS (talk|edits) 08:17, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

What I'm arguing against is the how the policies set out are regarded as the definitive "rule" and thus should be applied to every article, when they clearly do not apply well in every case and wouldn't mean anything if there is barely anyone editing in this wiki; working in an environment where there is very little breathing room, especially with regards to new games, is reduced to a tedious chore because of how much time is wasted working across multiple articles (no thanks to needless article fragmentation), as well as having to correct every damned piped link (no thanks to needless capitalization), terminology (no thanks to needlessly officiated fan terms), spelling and grammatical errors, layout problems, and image placement (no thanks to a lack of proofreading) in every affected article.
I love to take your incredibly long reply as a friendly gesture, but after finding out what happened to the Benson article, I don't even know if I want to carry on, especially when whatever I do or say don't mean jack shit as all that hard work is being torn apart by needless formatting, splits, crap fan terms. And I thought something as simple as articles about a video game series would be easy for people to manage. - ZS (talk|edits) 08:22, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
As for the tedious chores with no breathing room, I dispute that. Yes, as the wiki becomes more 'complete' (at least before GTA V), there will be less blue-sky broad-scale article creation to do, and as a result there is more cleaning up to do. I do not think big reorganisations are necessary, except when we change something like, but we do have Gtabot to do a lot of that stuff.
The "cleanup" is the tedious bit. While there are articles on nearly every topic, the contents of a lot of the articles suffer from anything from poor composition, in-universe writing, convoluted proses and the lack of organization, to missing information, missing pictures and missing formatting, problems that a bot cannot easily fix. All this requires research, screencapping, constant proofreading, and most importantly, repeated amendments and improvements, which is often tedious as it involve a lot of time spent modifying the wiki text. Even though I've long editing without the aid of a bot and would prefer to operate one on my own, I do not have the knowhow to operate one nor do I trust others to do the bot work as there has been cases when they botched editing.
I know you go around changing all redirect-links to piped-links, but I do not think that is necessary. I've certainly never asked anyone to do it and there is no policy saying that's what we should do.
Then what about efficiency in editing articles to save time? Is that not necessary? Wouldn't that help cover more articles on a daily basis, rather than having to spend longer hours working around what is effectively a broken system?
Yes, we should fix broken links, and some links do need to be piped, but there is no real benefit to going around piping every link on the wiki to a different page when a redirect serves that purpose. If this is the tedious work that you don't want to do, dont do it!
You seem not to understand that by making people use inaccurate titles created both from the unnecessary need to completely capitalize titles, they are made to believe that these are all official terms. SWAT Tank, Involuntary Ejection, GTA III Era, or Vehicle License Plates, for example, are not official terms, but when people use that link in another article, they won't go to SWAT Tank, for instance, to check the accurate name or take the initiative to pipe it, but simply use the "SWAT Tank" link, disregarding the accurate name. Not only does it make the article's writing look lazy, but the crappy writing also has the potential of affecting this wiki's credibility, something a low-traffic wiki like this cannot afford.
Redirects are there to help editors as well as users who are searching, and they solve the problems with capitalisation etc.
Redirects are not a completely useful workaround; forcing people to link through redirects adds to the server load due as the server is forced to retrieve both the redirect page and the actual article; redirects may also suffer from double redirects as a result of article moves, and not every unnecessarily capitalized term has a lower-case redirect, which also wrongly paints the picture that lower-case terms are not acceptable because a lot of them are redlinked.
With regards to Benson, I don't understand the problem. They are two completely unrelated articles - with nothing in common except sharing a name. Don't think of it as "reasons to split" - it's not as if we have all articles on 1 page and split them when it gets big. We have one page about each distinct thing. The Benson sports car is one thing, the Benson truck is another thing. So they should be on separate pages.

However, the actual naming of the pages is open - in fact if we adopted the LCD system, that would suggest we name them "Benson in GTA 2" rather than "Benson (car)". The idea of forcing the two articles to share the page is harmful to the content, confusing to the users, and there's no good reason for it. I can not see one single benefit of them sharing a page, except the fact that both cars would be on the same page. This has nothing to do with page size at all.

All this time, I've yet to read about how the table of contents could be used to overcome these problems. They provide directions on where a reader can skip to without having to scroll down and pass the GTA 2 section to reach the post-GTA 2 section. If the split was simply motivated by the mere presence of a different vehicle from an antiqued game seemingly disrupting the flow of a page, then what's the point of these TOCs floating on the top of so many articles? I'm sure readers are not that stupid to not make use of the TOC and distinguish which part of it covers one type of vehicle and which part covers another.
Even assuming a split is "justified", what was done at the Benson article has bias towards newer renditions of the vehicle because the "Benson" namespace is not used by a disambiguation page as logic dictates, but the truck, when the car and truck should be moved to "Benson (car)" and "Benson (truck)" respectively.
If there are things you really hate doing, things that make you want to leave, then I'd rather you spent your time on things you did enjoy and someone else could pick that up.
I have invested way too much time on this wiki to quit, even though the amount of time I can spend here has dwindled recently because of real-life.
You talk about people carrying on my torch, but I doubt that. For starters, this wiki barely has anyone editing. There hasn't been an output of good screenshots covering the entire series as of late, and worthwhile amendments and improvements made on articles are far under expectations in comparison to the Wikia.
You also imply that people "could" pick up where I left of with regards to obscure GTA games, but that's just bullshit. The problem with gaming wikis is that the general demographics of editors will usually gravitate towards games which they grew up with, and since the GTA series is now 15 years old, generation gaps within the fan community are apparent and the vast majority of fans to the series are too young to care about older games. These days you will see little to no love on GTA games that are nearly or over a decade old (GTA 1 to GTASA), or are obscure due to their platform (Advance and Chinatown Wars. Pages like the Counthash (Wikia page) or London (Wikia page) or I'd Like A Tank Please, Bob! (Wikia page) will never ever be updated with crucial information because barely anyone care. And when those who have specialized on these games are no longer active, those pages will not only be neglected, but will be forgotten. - ZS (talk|edits) 18:57, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Character Quotes

Hello Gboyers how are you? I have spent many hours on this Wiki and on the internet lately finding good quotes to use for characters throughout the series. I believe quotes are a strong, interesting way to introduce a reader to the characters page. However, all of my hours will be going to waste now, one of the favourites here, A-Dust, is going around and deleteing quotes with absolutley no explanation. Perhaps if he didn't like the specific quote I could understand, but the fact that this user feels he can do anything and delete everything he wants without even a slight explanation, is more then ridiculous. Unless I'm just fixing spelling, I always put a summary. The summary is meant to explain the change so that other Wiki users don't waste their time checking to see if it's a reasonable change or not. Now that I have explained myself, I will explain my side to A-Dust, and will be reverting any quote deletions I think should have stayed. However I can agree that some quotes can be changed. I hope you can see reason, thank you for your time. Grand Theft AJ (talk|edits) 22:12, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Patrolling broken?

Hi, I've been having a strange problem as of recently when trying to patrol edits. Most of the time when I go via the diff link on Recent Edits I get a little pop up error saying "Marking as patrolled failed." when I click the link to mark it patrolled. Although you can't get every edit with Special:Patrol, it still seems to be working fine if that is any help. Andreaz1 (talk|edits) 18:22, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

I've had the same issue with patrolling, but have read the responses on Andreaz1's talk page and I use the right-click/new tab method that was suggested. The only other problem I've come across is I can't patrol an edit on a page creation, because there's no previous edit to compare it to. Just looking for ideas to fix that. Also, I was just wondering if the server move would help the original issue. Ian Phoenixtalk 05:16, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey

Hello there Gerard! It's been a while :D. Just thought I'd stop by and see how everything's going and let you know that If I get myself a copy of GTA 5 I'll certainly start editing here again. GTA just hasn't been the thing I've been wanting to play for a long time. So.. yeah, I'm not dead, I've just lost interest. Hopefully GTA 5 will mitigate that, nice to see everything's looking well :). Chimpso (Talk) 12:36, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Era Vs 3D/HD

Hello again Gboyers, I'm here again hoping to prevent an Edit War before it happens. I've noticed that A-Dust is randomly changing traces of the term "GTA III Era" or "GTA IV Era" and replacing it with 3D and HD. I disagree with this, as we here at the wiki have referred to the Eras as such for a long time now. I don't see why it's suddenly being changed. An example of this confusion is on the page for Crow, A-Dust wrote:
"is a character that appears in the 3D Universe and the HD Universe (the GTA IV and GTA V eras)"
This is evidence enough that even he must clarify it as the original Eras to avoid confusion, thefore I will be reverting any Era name changes back to the previous versions until you say otherwise. Thank you for hearing me out. On another note, are you looking forward to any upcoming games? I personally am excited for Far Cry 3, Watchdogs, Dead Space 3 and The Last of Us. GTAV Template

I noticed you fixed the location of the GTAV template on the pages I added it to. I just wanted to apologize for giving you more work, and I would have fixed it myself had I been aware of the issue. I have fixed one other that I noticed, and kept it where it belongs while adding it to other pages. I just hope my work is positively received and not counterproductive. -IanPhoenix (talk|edits) 01:18, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

A-Dust has recently removed the GTAV template from all of the character pages from GTA V. I was just wondering if this had been discussed anywhere. -IanPhoenix (talk|edits) 05:15, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

User:Gtabot performing imports from Wikia

Hi. I'm looking to import a wiki from Wikia to my own server. I have the database dump from Wikia, although this only contains the pages and their histories. How did User:Gtabot perform the images imports from Wikia? Also how did you import the user accounts? Thanks in advance. (P.S. could you rename my account to "Inops", because this seems to be attached to another person [see my userpage]). --George (talk|edits) 16:32, 14 December 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank You

Thank you, Gboyers. At this time of the message sent, I don't have any time to check out the wiki because of my school starting its second semester this week and I can't use my computer during school days. Although, if I do have some time during the week after I complete my studies and this coming weekend, I'll check out the wiki.

Sincerely, Tony 4-2-8-1-9-9-8 (talk|edits) 03:22, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Recent edits

Hey Gboyers. Do you know what caused the wiki to be down for the last few days, and what has happened to the most recent edits? I made a few edits just before everything went down, but they have disappeared from the wiki. Should I make those edits again, or will they be restored? Christophee (talk) 13:32, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I have another question though. I've noticed that the Recent Edits list doesn't include edits by administrators (or whatever the term is on this wiki), but I would prefer to see all the edits there. Is there any way I can make the admin edits visible for myself? Christophee (talk) 22:27, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

My Reason Here

Hello, Gboyers. As I told you before, I am an active editor on GTA Wikia and the reason why I signed up to Grand Theft Wiki was because one of the longest active staff mentioned about GTW split from Wikia.

I know it does not concern me, but I wanted to ask how this happened from the time I signed up, but I thought to myself that the staff here will tell me that is none of my business. I ended up searching through the archives of GTA Wikia and I answered my own question.

Since my reason here is done with, doesn't mean I'm not going to come back here. I've seen the works of this wiki; it's much better than GTA Wikia to be honest with you. I will just make some gnomish edits that are need of correcting/fixing and help newcomers. I'm glad to be part of GTAW and GTW. Tony 4-2-8-1-9-9-8 (talk|edits) 00:37, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Just Cause Wiki

I am Saddex, aka Norrlanning96 on the Just Cause Wiki, where I heard that you used to be active admin and bureaucrat. I am now myself admin at this wiki, and we are probably going to insert a "Partners" list into the Main Page. Do you approve that we adds your wiki as a partner? (Saddex (talk|edits) 10:46, 31 March 2013 (UTC))

Since I never got an answer on my question about the partners/affiliates on the JC wiki, I take that as you accept that we add the wiki to our (for now short) list over partners/affiliates on the Main Page, since I know your background there. If you have any objections, post them right here. Have a nice day! (Saddex (talk|edits) 21:34, 2 April 2013 (UTC))

Uhhmm...

You said that you agreed for your wiki to become an affiliate of ours. I then checked out the affiliation program. Our wiki fullfills all but one, critical requirement; it is not a GTA wiki, nor a wiki for a Rockstar game. Do you indirectly mean in your answer that JC wiki doesn't need to fullfill that requirement? I am a little confused now. (SaddexJustCause 01:06, 6 April 2013 (UTC))

Done, now just add us on the affiliates page!

I forgot that logo firstly, but I added it today on our Main Page. Then it's just to you or someone else to add us on the affiliates page! Somehow I couldn't upload the logo though. (SaddexJustCause 13:37, 14 April 2013 (UTC))

Uploading problems

I try to upload the resized logo from our wiki here for the Affiliates page, with "this is an logo of an real-life company", which only results in "Could not create an 'MW directionery'" or such. If I change the format to jpg from png, it says something about the jpg "doesn't match the png". What's wrong? (SaddexJustCause 17:09, 22 April 2013 (UTC))

Everything is done now

Now it's up to that the affiliate request is being accepted. I prefer of course that you do that :), because we have a deal. The affiliation may be a little controversial to the other admins, as it lets us bypass one of the rules. However, you are the executive manager and owner of this ship, so it's literally you that decides what happens. By the way, is there anything I can help with here? I have Vice City for my S III now and wants to hear if there's anything in that section that needs help? I have actually not played so much GTA in general. San Andreas is the other game I've played the most. (SaddexJustCause 22:08, 29 April 2013 (BST))

Are you still here?

I am still waiting for an answer to my previous question. Where are you? :P (SaddexJustCause 16:29, 3 May 2013 (BST))

Cities, Counties, States

I have a few questions for you about the cities, counties and states in the GTA series as a whole.

Question 1 Is 2D San Andreas from GTA 1 a city or a state?

It is a city

Question 2 What state is Anywhere City from GTA 2 located?

Nobody knows - it could be anywhere (hence the name). But it does have a resemblance to Liberty City in GTA III Era.

Question 3 Is Upstate Liberty and Ghost Town part of 3D Liberty City?

Yes, but it's not part of the game.

Question 4 Is Vice City smaller than 3D Liberty City?

No - LC is smaller than VC, which is smaller than SA, which is smaller than LC in IV, which will be smaller than LS in V. See this image as an approximate comparison.

Question 5 Are the towns in 3D San Andreas unincorporated communities or incorporated towns with a government?

I doubt this is made clear in the game - unless it's mentioned on the welcome signs to any of the towns. I'm not familiar enough with American local government systems to spot any tell-tale signs like (idk) a city hall or something.

Question 6 Is East Island City from IV a separate municipality or just a part of HD Liberty City?

It's just a neighbourhood, like any other. The word 'City' in its name is because the real Long Island City used to be a separate city, but is now just a neighbourhood of NYC.

Question 7 Is Acter Industrial Park from IV a separate municipality or just a part of the city of Acter?

My understanding is it's a separate location adjacent to Acter.

Question 8 Is the Alderney State Correctional Facility from IV a separate municipality or just a part of Acter Industrial Park?

Not quite sure. My first instinct says it's part of the park, because it's in the "out of town industrial area", but I don't think it would be governed as part of the park, as it's not industrial or commercial.

Question 9 Is Port Tudor from IV a separate municipality from Tudor of just a part of the city of Tudor?

I'd say this is separate

Question 10 Is Carcer City and Bullworth in the same universe as the GTA games, if it is, in what GTA universe does it belong?

I understand that Carcer City is in the 3D Universe - I don't think Bullworth has specifially been mentioned but I expect that would also be the 3D Universe.

Those are some interesting questions - my answers are indented. Generally those sorts of questions could go on the Talk page for each article it's relevant to. gboyers talk 18:11, 1 April 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm also that user.

Hey gboyers! I'm also Angelobrylle24, the one who made changes to the flatiron in the San Andreas indroduction, the one who embedded video links of the iPad 2 version to the first few missions of GTAIII and the one who argued with eras and universes.

Sorry of I made a new account, I really need answers to that questions I asked yesterday, 'cause I'm curious and can't seem to find some answers on the wiki. Sorry if I told about this late, because when I asked you those questions it was already midnight or past midnight here.

Hard to believe? Don't worry I'll fix it myself. You just need to fix your 'Forgot your password' link doesn't seem to work. Its permissions are set to 'members only', I suppose, because when I click on that link it says that you need to login first. Weird isn't it. If you could fix that issue. You can delete this account and I'll move to my old one. Thanks :)

Image uploading

Hello! While trying to upload a picture here, I get the following warning: "Could not create directory ‘mwstore://local-backend/local-public’. " Could it be something related to the server restore? Andreaz1 (talk|edits) 16:12, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

I keep getting the same error message. I've been trying to upload the newly released Official GTA V box art all day. I too, am assuming this was affected by the server troubles last week. -Ian Phoenix (talk|edits) 01:16, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm also getting the following error message when I try to add an image to a page: Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination. Is this related to the uploading issue? Christophee (talk) 20:24, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

I can see the problem, basically this server is still broken, and we're struggling to keep it running. We will be moving servers in a few days, so once everything is set up there, it should all be working. gboyers talk 11:58, 7 April 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Images

Hey, how's it going? Sorry I haven't been active on here for a while. For a while, I had lost interest in this but I've come back to finish things I've been meaning to do. I saw the post above about the problems with uploading images. I was just wondering when this would be fixed. I am anxious to get a lot of images uploaded on here. --Gta-mysteries 20:13, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

I've replied elsewhere, but we'll be moving server in a few days. Our issues can then be fixed. But other than fixes, but nobody should notice anything different. gboyers talk 21:22, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sub-categories

Hi, I was just wondering something. I've been looking at these new sub-categories for screenshots and thinking are they necessary? We have a regular category for screenshots, do we really need to have categories for businesses, vehicles, missions...etc? --Gta-mysteries 00:33, 29 April 2013 (BST)

The original purpose behind them was to make it easier to find images, for use in places like the main page, banner, other related pages and general usage. If we just had 'Screenshots of GTA IV' that would have thousands of images in and would be completely unusable. Splitting them up into characters, vehicles, buildings/businesses and weapons is pretty straightfoward - with 'missions' showing events. I'm not sure whether this is the best way, but I'm definitely open to suggestions. gboyers talk 09:37, 29 April 2013 (BST)

Maybe, but isn't that why we have the standard categories (Category:Characters in GTA III) do we really need a new category for only images? Surely the screenshots can just go in the original. And do we really need a screenshot template for every category if we keep them? Also, I have concerns on character pages. In the character history section someone put information which isn't even in the game.

Example: Mike Forelli:

"Mike Forelli was born and raised in the United States, most likely Liberty City, and joined the Forelli Family, rising up the ranks of the family."

I think this is ridiculous seeing this on every character page when as far as I know, there is no evidence whatsoever that says this. --Gta-mysteries 03:36, 9 May 2013 (BST)

The problem with using the normal categories (instead of specific image categories) was this: When a category has more than 200 items in it, it splits it up over several pages. Unfortunately, if there were more than 200 images in a category (but only 5 articles), it would also spread the articles across several pages. So we ended up having 1 article listed on every page (because it split it by first letter), so even in a category with 5 articles we had to go several pages just to even see one of the articles. Using separate categories was the best way to fix that. However, now I believe this has changed so that articles and images are paginated separately. So having images in the normal article categories might now be a better option. I'll run this past A-Dust.
As for the information in Mike Forelli - you're right that should not be there as it's pointless waffle and potentially inaccurate. I definitely think we need to have an opening sentence (Mike is a member of the XYZ gang in XYZ game) but if we don't have anything more to say we should definitely not be inventing things, making random guesses (born in LC) or trying to generate a backstory that has no canonical backing in the game. Okay maybe in this situation it's highly likely that he would have been a member for many years, and that he 'rose through the ranks' - both are complete assumptions. Saying 'probably born in LC' is pointless too. So yes - we should correct that and any other similar examples. gboyers talk 19:29, 10 May 2013 (BST)
I've looked at the templates. It seems there is a template for every category. If we do choose to keep the new categories, surely we can do away with the templates? --Gta-mysteries 01:05, 13 June 2013 (BST)

Wiki fixes

The server move fixed the image uploading issue, but it in turn created some other issues (special pages, i.e. YouTube links, who's online, etc). I'm sure you're probably working on them already, but I was just wondering if there is anything I could do to help out. What do we need to do to fix the problems? Ian Phoenixtalk 05:17, 29 April 2013 (BST)

Yes - long story short I have reinstalled the wiki from scratch to ensure everything works as intended (as our old copy got corrupted by the drive failure). I still need to go through and add a few other custom extensions, but I will be selective about which additional ones I enable. I was hoping it would fix the patrolling issue, but it doesn't help that when you google the error this page comes up top! I'll sort some of it today but feel free to point out any problems you see after today. gboyers talk 09:37, 29 April 2013 (BST)

The only problems I've noticed lately are both on the main page. The poll (which was outdated anyway) isn't working, nor is the "Popular Articles" column. Ian Phoenixtalk 02:49, 5 May 2013 (BST)

You are very busy...or what? :P

As you can see above I have finished all steps in the Affilation guide, and the only left is for an admin to add the wiki on a new section in the page. I have checked often the last four days, and you have been online at least most of these days. Still, I am waiting for an answer, or an action in the subject. I want to have this done. I thought you will notice when I write a new entry on the talk page. (SaddexJustCause 20:30, 3 May 2013 (BST))

Hey

<p> tag everywhere?

A lot of areas around the wiki seems to be using the <p> tag everywhere. Doing a general change to the tag has affected certain pages like Feltzer. I skimmed over another MediaWiki website and it doesn't seem to have these tags everywhere.--spaceeinstein 18:51, 16 August 2013 (BST)

Spacing in articles

Hello. I was wondering if you know what could be done about the spacing in-between the paragraphs on articles? A while ago, they were broken into paragraphs. Now they're just grouped in together. But when I try to edit, then they are broken into paragraphs. Awc (talk|edits) 10:04, 24 August 2013 (BST)

GTA Online

I was thinking we should add Grand Theft Auto Online to the list at Template:Game as it will be separate and bigger than Grand Theft Auto V. Some pages (such as Lamar or the Khamelion) already have their GTA O appearance listed on the infobox, but it would be much easier to have a short form to use. Ian Phoenixtalk 02:45, 9 September 2013 (BST)

Agreed - from what I've heard from Rockstar, they're treating it as seriously as a new game launch, and they're very proud of it. gboyers talk 21:40, 9 September 2013 (BST)

GTA V radio stations

Sorry to bother you again with this, but something has come up. [1] The complete listing of songs and playlists, and the leak proves it's accurate. I'm not sure how "official" it is, it might be from the official guidebook. So, I'm asking for your permission to make the playlists on the Wiki. I think it would be ridiculous to wait 6 more days when the entire internet has it, but us; which I'm sure you already know.

While I'm at it, I'm very concerned about this wiki's relations with Rockstar; you said Rockstar employees check this wiki, how do you know it? If it's from that Dan Houser quote on the Main Page, how do you know he was referring to this wiki and not to the wikia? The Wikia is now far more active and popular than GTW after all.--Loadingue (talk|edits) 14:49, 11 September 2013 (BST)

Sorry, I must have given the wrong impression by saying "check". I meant that, according to you, Rockstar employees visit this Wiki every so and then. What makes you think so? Also, you haven't given me the authorization to complete the radio playlists.--Loadingue (talk|edits) 22:30, 11 September 2013 (BST)

Guess who?

Gotta make my yearly announcement that I am not dead (yet), but I have better news now. I plan on coming back and editing here again. Money is a bit tight for me at the moment so It'll probably take a few weeks to finally get my hands on GTA V, but if my PC can run it I plan on doing what I did for a lot of the GTA IV missions: taking several screen caps per mission and adding them to the mission pages. As usual, I'll be here to help with any admin related tasks (if I'm still qualified to perform them), and will try my best to patrol edits whenever I happen to be on. Anyways, gonna look around here just to re-hash all the things I've forgotten. Fortunately, you never really forget how to edit a wiki. :D See you around. "Loss of session data"

As of lately, I keep getting the error message "Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data. Please try again. I try to log out and back in, and clearing any cookies and cache I might have, and while it might work for just a few minutes, the error keeps coming back. What could it be? Mission infoboxes on odd-jobs

Hey gboyers,

I wasn't sure who to ask, so I figured i'd ask you. I've been wondering, should odd-job and vehicle mission pages (such as Patriot Playground) contain mission infoboxes? If so, should a "Time limit" tag be added to the mission infobox template to show the time limit if applicable? Thanks! Alleypuppy (talk|edits) 01:16, 10 December 2013 (GMT)

Categories

Hey there Gboyers, is there any way we could someone count adding categories as minor edits? A-Dust has been adding categories to hundreds of pages of pictures and it's taking up pages of the Recent Edits which is making it harder to find and check on recent edits to articles that are actually about the game, story or characters. If not than I guess we'll wait until he's finished adding categories to a thousand other pictures haha. Grand Theft AJ (talk|edits) 13:38, 10 May 2014 (BST)

"In GTA V" vs. "(HD Universe)"

With GTA Online being considered a separate entity by Rockstar, should we be leaving the GTA V Era pages where they are, or should they really be listed with (HD Universe)? Our counterparts on the GTA Wikia site have had it the latter for quite awhile whereas we've retained the former. What's your take on this? Ian Phoenixtalk 05:20, 23 May 2014 (BST)

Security Issue

Hi Gboyers. You may remember me from a message I left on your talk page right after you moved off Wikia letting you know how happy I was to see Grand Theft Wiki left Wikia and that I was moving several of my wikis off too.

I just wanted to alert you about an exploit in an extension which just led to one of my wikis being hacked with multiple accounts being compromised. I don't know how it was done, but the attacker admitted that he used an exploit in the "Sudo" extension that he found on 4chan. After I disabled the Sudo extension the attacks stopped and the hacker confessed that Sudo was his method. I'm trying to figure out exactly how the exploit was done so I can report it to the extension developer.

I went on WikiApiary to see which wikis had the extension installed and I saw Grand Theft Wiki listed (and you guys are one of my absolute favorites). I strongly advise that you disable the Sudo extension completely because I don't want to see you guys go through the living hell we went through.

Thanks.

Car Mistake

The real car model of the Karin Futo (Grand Theft Auto IV - V) is actually an AE88 Corolla which is the American version of the AE86 from the Toyota Corolla lineup. The AE86 people mistake it for is only found in Japan, as it was exclusively released in Japan for many reasons. You can also see a big difference between them, as the AE86's wheel is on the right as it is for every other car in Japan while the AE88's wheel is on the left. The models also have a big difference. The back of the car exposes the reason why it is different, as the AE88's back is more out than the AE86's (The AE86's back is barely out at all). I don't plan on changing it myself as I don't think many will agree with me. Thank you for taking your time to read this. --Drifterjap (talk|edits) 23:21, 4 December 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mobile Version

Hey Gboyers.

I was the one who asked the question about the formatting of the mobile version of the site. I make an iOS application that scrapes the mobile version of the site and when the format of the pages are changed, the application stops functioning. It would be really awesome if, even if you did migrate to a new default mobile format, you could have a parameter that would allow me to view the original mobile formatting of any page, to avoid having to re-tool my application every time a small change is made to the website code. Thanks a bunch! Unsigned comment added by grantbrooksgoodman (talkcontribs)

Hi Grant. That sounds interesting, what app is that? To give the background - an update to our mobile frontend broke it so had to revert to the other skin until it was resolved. There are some URL parameters you can use to directly select a skin, whether Vector (our default) or Minerva (the mobile frontend). You can also specify printable or raw wiki code. Given that we occasionally update or upgrade the site's software, I'd suggest you build in a fallback in case Minerva breaks or changes. Hope that helps. gboyers talk 09:13, 26 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The application is called Trivia for Grand Theft Auto. I made it for myself mainly. It just goes to a random page on this Wiki and formats it nicely for mobile viewing. Basically used to stock up on useless Grand Theft Auto trivia. 😂 I will use the theme parameter from now on, thank you. It's okay if the site occasionally breaks, I just wanted to make sure that the original mobile theme did not disappear completely. Thanks again!

How do I apply for staff?

Please let me know, I would like to be a staff for this site.

Possible account creation issue

Hey Gerard. Someone messaged me on another site saying that they can't create an account here, resulting in a fatal exception error. Can you look into this? Thanks.--spaceeinstein 23:19, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

The forums got updated but then everything else in the network went down. Eventually some sites in the network went back up but GTAModding is unfortunately not one of them. It seems like the modding community feels increasingly neglected there.
If you're interested, I managed another wiki and got the same spammy account creations problem. I combat it by using the extensions ConfirmEdit and QuestyCaptcha. In the LocalSettings, I have something like this:
require_once "$IP/extensions/ConfirmEdit/ConfirmEdit.php";
require_once "$IP/extensions/ConfirmEdit/QuestyCaptcha.php";
$wgCaptchaClass = 'QuestyCaptcha';
$arr = array (
"Copy and paste 'gta gta gta gta gta gta' without the quotes:" => "gta gta gta gta gta gta",
"Copy and paste 'gta gta gta' without the quotes:" => "gta gta gta",
);
foreach ( $arr as $key => $value ) {
   $wgCaptchaQuestions[] = array( 'question' => $key, 'answer' => $value );
}
So when people want to create an account there, they must copy and paste the text into a text box before proceeding. The array can be expanded with more variations so bots won't easily predict what to put in. It's a simple system and I received no complaints from anyone compared to other methods I've tried.--spaceeinstein 22:42, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Yep - as you can see on Special:Version, we already use ConfirmEdit with Google's ReCaptcha. It's usually pretty good, but we can tweak the sensitivity to keep those account creation bots away. gboyers talk 11:30, 2 September 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
