'''Badlands''' is the twenty-eighth storyline mission, twenty-sixth central storyline mission and first exile-chapter mission in [[Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas]], given to [[protagonist]] [[Carl Johnson|Carl "CJ" Johnson]] by the primary antagonistic [[C.R.A.S.H.]] team from the trailer near the [[Angel Pine Save Point|save point]] in the town of [[Angel Pine]] in rural [[Whetstone]], [[San Andreas in GTA III Era|San Andreas]].

== Mission ==

After the [[The Green Sabre|massive deadly assault battle]] under the [[Mulholland Intersection]] that resulted in his brother [[Sweet|Sean "Sweet" Johnson]]'s incarceration, Carl is taken out of the city of [[Los Santos in GTA III Era|Los Santos]] to begin performing tasks for C.R.A.S.H. officers [[Frank Tenpenny]] and [[Eddie Pulaski|Edward "Eddie" Pulaski]]. The first of these tasks is a favor for Tenpenny, who asks Carl to eliminate an ex-police officer being held by the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] under a witness protection program. The witness, who has compromising information about Tenpenny, is hiding in a remote cabin located on the side of [[Mount Chiliad in GTA III Era|Mount Chiliad]]. Carl, disarmed by the officers and carrying only a [[camera]], is forced to make his way from Angel Pine up the side of the mountain. He then flushes the witness out of the cabin, and chases him down the mountain as he attempts to flee in his [[Washington|car]]. After Carl stops and kills the witness, he photographs the evidence that Tenpenny's former colleague will no longer be talking.

== Reward ==

There is no reward for this mission, but a phone call will be received from [[Cesar Vialpando]], which unlocks the cutscene [[First Date (GTA SA)|First Date]].

* This mission is the first in the game requiring the use of a camera and serves as training in its use if the player isn't familiar with the camera.

*This is the only mission in the game without any dialogue, and among a handful of missions that would not involve any in-game dialogue. This is also the only mission in direct succession to an equally equipped mission to use the [[Trip Skip]] feature, being the fifth mission to do so.

* The light blue [[Washington]] that the witness escapes in has a San Fierro [[Custom Vehicle License Plates|license plate]] that reads "ASSMAN".

* Sometimes, the witness may run over the edge of the mountain and kill himself. This can be achieved if the player destroys the car, but a [[Wanted Level in GTA III Era #Two stars|2-star wanted level]] will be attained in this case.
