I use external scripts that log into the wiki and edit it. The two I use are [[wp:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser|AWB]] and [[Pywikipediabot|pywikipedia]]. AWB is a graphical program where you can get it to do the same thing to multiple pages, such as add/remove a category. Pywp is a server-side command-line tool which I feed large data sets to.
