I have to add one more thing that bugs me is that Vice City is in GTA's Florida, San Andreas is in GTA's California but Liberty City is in Liberty State, Whats with that R*? I don't remember the state of New York having a copyright on it. If Liberty City is in Liberty State, shouldnt Vice City be in Vice State, Carcer in Carcer State, San Andreas be in Andreas State? Why disclude your rendition of NYC from the real life reference? LC looks astonishingly close to NYC so it should be in New York, not Liberty State.--Gerry Spring 19:20, October 28, 2009 (UTC)

I agree with the cities being islands thing. They could make it an infinite plain of green land as you drive beyond the games map and San Andreas is a state.--Dasvahdonya 13:22, November 1, 2009 (UTC)

I agree as well, it'd be much better if they'd done it like Shoreside Vale in GTA III with the map ending at a mountain with blocked tunnels or something leading to the rest of the world. Also, regarding the states which the cities existed in during the GTA III era, Vice City is stated as existing alongside Miami and (if my memory serves) the same is implied for GTA III-era Liberty City and New York, so it made sense for those to be in Florida and New York State respectively. Rockstar only started moving away from this with San Andreas by creating their own state based on California to set the game in. So my guesstimation is that the GTA IV era is intended to be an alternate "galaxy" of sorts (rather than just an alternate universe), in which New York State, Miami, and California are "replaced" by fictional equivalents like Liberty State, Alderney State, and San Andreas. I suspect that if the GTA 5 rumors are true and it's set in Vice City, this new iteration of it will exist in a new fictional state replacing the real world's Florida.
